While walking with a weighted vest is one of the simplest ways to increase the intensity of your daily movement, it is crucial to start with good walking technique. Discover how to walk well and pick up some tips in a guest contribution from WalkActive Founder, Joanna Hall MSc Sport Science.
Walk Better with a Weighted Vest: Why Your Walking Technique Matters More Than the Weight You Carry
Walk Better with a Weighted Vest: Why Your Walking Technique Matters More Than the Weight You Carry
Walking with a weighted vest has become increasingly popular - and for good reason. Adding an appropriate amount of load can increase the fitness challenge, stimulate muscle and bone strength, and help improve cardiovascular fitness.
But here's the part that is often overlooked.
It's not just about walking with weight. It's about how you walk in your weighted vest. And that's why FARRA. asked Joanna Hall MSc Sport Science Creator and Founder the WalkActive Method to write this blog piece and share some of the WalkActive scientifically proven technique tips that you can take on your next walk.
Here, Joanna breaks down the exact steps you need to take and why:
When you add weight to your body, every step places greater demand on your muscles, joints and posture. If your walking technique isn't working for you, adding weight simply magnifies those movement patterns.
That's why, before you think about increasing the load, I always encourage people to improve the quality of their walking technique first. This has a direct impact on your posture, your walking pace and your joint care.
At The WalkActive Method, we've spent years researching exactly that. Independent testing at the South Bank Sports Performance Laboratory showed our scientifically developed walking technique significantly improves posture, reduces joint strain at the knees and ankles, and can increase walking speed by up to 24%—without simply asking people to move their legs faster.
Here are my top technique tips for getting the very best from your weighted vest.
1. Walk Out of Your Back Space
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people trying to pull themselves forwards with the front leg.
Instead, think about walking out of the space behind you.
Your power comes from the muscles running through your posterior chain—your calves, hamstrings and glutes—not from dragging yourself forwards with your hip flexors.
Try this WalkActive tip
Imagine there's a little Post-it Note stuck to the sole of your back foot.
As your foot leaves the ground, imagine peeling that Post-it Note away behind you.
This simple visual encourages a stronger push-off, helping you recruit the muscles designed to propel you forwards while taking unnecessary strain away from your hips and knees.
2. Create Stability Without Rigidity
When people hear "engage your core," many immediately grip everything.
Unfortunately, that often creates stiffness through the pelvis, hips and lower back.
Instead, I want you to create lift rather than tension.
Try this WalkActive tip
Stand wearing your weighted vest.
Place your hand between your pubic bone and your belly button.
Now imagine gently lifting this whole area upwards about 80%, while only drawing it in around 20%.
Your glutes should stay relaxed.
This creates a beautifully supported centre without locking the pelvis, allowing your hips to move more freely and efficiently.
The result?
- smoother propulsion
- better walking pace
- improved torso symmetry
- less stress through the hips
- reduced lower back discomfort
3. Give Your Body Five Minutes to Find Its Rhythm
One of the biggest mistakes people make with weighted vest walking is setting off too fast.
Your body needs time to organise itself.
Those first five minutes are incredibly valuable.
Rather than thinking about speed, think about creating space throughout your body.
Try this WalkActive tip
Repeat this simple mantra as you walk:
"I am expansive."
Allow your ribs to soften, your hips to open, your ankles to move more freely and your spine to feel taller.
This gentle opening helps your walking technique naturally improve before asking your body to work harder.
Moving your legs faster before you've found good movement is simply false economy.
4. Your Pace Starts with Technique
Many walkers believe walking faster simply means taking quicker steps.
Actually, your walking pace develops in this order:
Technique → Stride Length → Cadence
Good posture allows better movement.
Better movement naturally creates a longer, more efficient stride.
Only then should you gradually increase your cadence.
Try this WalkActive tip
If you're already a regular fitness walker, a cadence around 120 steps per minute is an excellent place to begin with a weighted vest.
If you're newer to fitness walking, I'd recommend working between 100–110 steps per minute first.
Master your technique before increasing speed.
You'll be amazed not only by the difference in your posture and comfort, but also how much easier walking feels—and how energised your brain feels afterwards.
5. Better Posture Means Better Performance
A weighted vest shouldn't pull you forwards.
Instead, it should encourage you to become taller.
When your posture improves, your breathing becomes easier, your arms swing more naturally, your hips move more efficiently and every step becomes more economical.
That's exactly why technique matters so much.
At WalkActive, we don't simply teach people to stand up straighter.
We coach the body to move better from the ground upwards—helping reduce unnecessary joint loading while improving walking efficiency.
When you're carrying additional weight, that's even more important.
Small Changes. Remarkable Results.
A weighted vest can be a fantastic addition to your walking routine.
But remember...
The goal isn't to carry more weight.
The goal is to move better while carrying it.
That's exactly why Joanna created Walk2TheBeat.
